My WOOSUK, We WOOSUK
Woosuk University is a world-class university that cultivates talents by discovering raw materials and turning them into jewels.
Let us be the light of the world together with our students.
Woosuk University is the only hydrogen-focused university in the country.
"Beyond Korea, we are becoming a hub university for the global clean energy ecosystem."
Woosuk University is concentrating all its resources on becoming a hydrogen-centered university. In Wanju County's selection as a hydrogen-specialized national industrial complex, Woosuk University presented a practical blueprint. Furthermore, the university is building a strong "hydrogen ecosystem" with leading global hydrogen companies both domestically and internationally, striving to drive the hydrogen industry beyond Korea and globally. Furthermore, the university is making strenuous efforts to become a leading hub university in the hydrogen industry, including becoming the first Korean university to fully operate a hydrogen fuel cell power plant. President Park Rojun emphasized, "Driven by the urgency to transform the university at the speed of light, we are expediting our journey to becoming a hydrogen-centered university to complete Woosuk University's 100-year blueprint."
Wanju Hydrogen-Specialized National Industrial Complex : A Real Key Player
In March 2023, the government selected 15 national high-tech industrial complexes, including the Wanju Hydrogen Specialized National Industrial Complex, to foster future cutting-edge industries. Among these, the Hydrogen Specialized National Industrial Complex, which will be the first national high-tech industrial complex in Wanju County's history, is planned to be built on a 500,000-pyeong (approximately 1.5 million square meters) site in Bongdong-eup, Wanju County, by 2027.
Wanju County estimates that direct investment in the development of the hydrogen-specialized national industrial complex will reach 3.084 trillion won in 72 companies and generate a production-induced effect of 5.9274 trillion won, for a total investment benefit exceeding 9.0114 trillion won. The investment is expected to create approximately 8,000 direct jobs and 20,000 in indirect employment, resulting in the creation of over 30,000 jobs.
Above all, the fact that the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Regional Innovation Center (RIC) of Woosuk University took the lead in presenting the blueprint and playing a substantial role in the process of Wanju County attracting the national high-tech industrial complex has garnered special attention.
Woosuk University RIC directly provided empirical data for the following projects that Wanju-gun had put forward as essential plans during the attraction process: △Hydrogen Product Inspection Support Center, △Establishment of a Spent Fuel Cell Infrastructure, △Energy Storage System (ESS) Safety Evaluation Center, and △Hydrogen Storage Tank Reliability Evaluation Center. Currently, the RIC is not sparing academic and empirical support for establishing a system to foster and support the hydrogen industry in Korea beyond Wanju-gun and Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province.
Join hands with global companies including Hyundai Motor Company
Since 2008, Woosuk University has been making strenuous efforts to establish a hydrogen fuel cell infrastructure in preparation for the future hydrogen energy era. Centered around RIC, Woosuk University is working with global hydrogen companies at home and abroad to write a new chapter in the history of the hydrogen industry.
In fact, Woosuk University is working hard to build an organic virtuous cycle ecosystem and expand the hydrogen industry with major companies such as Hyundai Motor Company, Doosan Fuel Cell, SK E&S, LS Mtron, Hyundai Mobis, Iljin Hysolus, and Vinatech, a leading hydrogen company in the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province.
Furthermore, Woosuk University has consistently transferred core, foundational technologies to over 100 hydrogen-related companies, leveraging its exceptional academic pride in the hydrogen field.
In particular, it is actively contributing to the globalization and standardization of the hydrogen industry, including being the first domestic university to establish two international standards, thereby impressing upon the world the competitiveness and potential of Korea's hydrogen energy.
Korea's first university hydrogen fuel cell power plant goes into operation.
Woosuk University became the first university in Korea to operate a hydrogen fuel cell power plant, a symbol of clean energy, starting in the 2024 academic year. Located in the dormitory's heating building, five 10kW hydrogen fuel cell power plants are currently in operation, generating electricity using hydrogen extracted from city gas.
Currently, hydrogen fuel cell power plants produce 5 kW of electricity per hour, or an average of 250 kW per day.
The electricity produced is used throughout the operation of the dormitory, and the cost-saving effect of using hydrogen energy is known to be approximately 50% compared to the existing one.
Woosuk University plans to actively pursue the role of a think tank in the field of hydrogen energy based on data derived from the operation of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant, and to actively build a cooperative body among academia, industry, and research institutes to become Korea's leading hydrogen-centered university.

Woosuk University Opens 'Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute'
"We will become a think tank that goes beyond Wanju and seizes the global hydrogen paradigm."
Woosuk University and Wanju County have joined forces to embark on a grand journey to accelerate the "Global Hydrogen City of Wanju." The Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute, designed to drive the hydrogen industry ecosystem not only in Wanju but also in Korea and the world, officially opened on January 22, 2025. With the opening of the Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute, Woosuk University can now present a concrete blueprint for its leap forward as a "Global Hydrogen-Centered University."
The Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute, housed in the Wanju Economic Center, will focus on exploring ways to revitalize the hydrogen industry in Wanju County, developing policies, promoting current projects, operating a win-win network with businesses, and fostering talent tailored to the hydrogen strategic industry. Lee Hong-ki, Vice President for Industry-Academic Cooperation and a leading figure in the domestic hydrogen industry, has been appointed as the first director of the Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute, while Song Hyeong-soo, former Director of Jeonbuk Technopark, has been appointed as Vice Director. Going forward, the Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute plans to lead the promotion and development of the local hydrogen industry with a 15-member advisory committee comprised of top domestic experts, including Moon Sang-jin, Executive Director of Doosan Fuel Cell Co., Ltd.
Director Lee Hong-ki expressed his ambition, saying, “Wanju County will lead the domestic hydrogen industry through policies that differentiate it from other regions, and will pursue various projects such as research and development, certification support, and standardization to enable companies located there to be competitive in the global market.”
Signed a business agreement with SZU , the representative national organization for European certification.
Woosuk University : "Becoming a Leader in the European Hydrogen Industry Conquest"
Woosuk University has signed a business agreement with SZU, a leading CE certification agency in the Czech Republic, to serve as a stepping stone for expanding Korea's advanced hydrogen industry into Europe. This agreement is particularly significant as a single university has taken the initiative to serve as a bridgehead for the European expansion of the hydrogen industry, considered a next-generation growth engine for Korea.
Woosuk University and SZU, along with the Czech Hydrogen Association (HYTEP), successfully concluded a business agreement signing ceremony at the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade on March 22, 2024. Founded in 1898, SZU is an organization under the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade with over 120 years of history. It is a representative certification body essential for the hydrogen industry to advance into Europe, and is also a specialized body for KEYMARK certification and heat pumps, which only a few certification bodies in Europe can perform. In particular, given that domestic hydrogen companies require CE certification, equivalent to a passport, to enter the EU (European Union) and EFTA (EFTA, a free trade association of four countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland), the collaboration between Woosuk University and SZU is expected to be a new breakthrough for the expansion of the domestic hydrogen industry.
Vice President Lee Hong-ki, who spearheaded this business agreement, said, “With this agreement, Woosuk University will be able to present an innovative model for cooperation between industry, academia, and research institutions in the hydrogen field through its global network.”
Vice President Lee Hong-ki hosts the "Hydrogen Industry Ecosystem Building Forum."
Throwing down the gauntlet to lead the hydrogen paradigm
Woosuk University held the "Forum on Strengthening University Capacity for Building a Hydrogen Industry Ecosystem and Responding to Climate Change" at the Jeonju Grand Hillston Hotel on November 8, 2024, to analyze the current state of the hydrogen industry ecosystem and present a blueprint. The forum was hosted by Woosuk University's Glocal 30 Promotion Headquarters and the JB Geo-Industry-Academia Cooperation Foundation, and co-hosted by the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, Wanju County, Woosuk University's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Regional Innovation Center, and the Wanju Hydrogen Research Institute.
The forum was attended by Vice President for Industry-Academic Cooperation Lee Hong-ki, Director of Industry-Academic Cooperation Group Jeong Hee-seok of Woosuk University, Director of Clean Energy and Hydrogen Division Bae Joo-hyun of Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province, Director Lee Jeong-hee of Wanju County, Professor Lee Seung-hoon of Industry-Academic Cooperation Group of Woosuk University, Vice President Lim Wan-bin of the Korea New and Renewable Energy Association, Senior Research Fellow Kim Jae-kyung of the Hydrogen Economy Research Group at the Korea Energy Economics Institute, Senior Researcher Kim Su-hyun of the Plant Engineering Center at the Institute for Advanced Engineering, CEO Jeon Hee-kwon of Vina FCM Co., Ltd., CEO Oh Jae-young of SZU KOREA, Director Lee Joo-seong of the Hydrogen Business Group at KTR (Korea Testing & Research Institute for Chemical Industry), and Managing Director Moon Sang-jin of Doosan Fuel Cell Co., Ltd.
At the forum, Vice President Lee Hong-ki presented Woosuk University's blueprint for leaping forward as a global university, leveraging hydrogen energy as a next-generation driving force. Vice President Lee stated, "Going forward, Woosuk University will do its utmost to achieve the quantum leap toward becoming a century-long university by implementing this hydrogen energy-centered roadmap in stages."

A Valuable Stepping Stone to Becoming a World-Class Hydrogen-Centric University
A hydrogen fuel cell power plant, hailed as an icon of cutting-edge clean energy, has opened in the dormitory building of Woosuk University's Jeonju Campus. It holds special significance as the first of its kind among Korean universities, and full operation will begin in March 2024.
Woosuk University, a leading university in the field of hydrogen fuel cells, signed an agreement with Wanju County and Jeonbuk Technopark in 2022 to build and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel cell system to support Wanju County's hydrogen pilot city development project (construction of a hydrogen mini-town). This agreement will lead to the construction of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant. The 50kW building-mounted hydrogen fuel cell successfully completed preliminary inspections for full-scale operation after a year-long pilot operation last year.
Five 10kW hydrogen fuel cell power plants, located in the heating building within the dormitory, are currently in operation, generating electricity using hydrogen extracted from city gas. The electricity generated is used throughout the dormitory's operations, and the cost savings from using hydrogen energy are reportedly approximately 50% compared to existing systems.
Going forward, Woosuk University plans to play a multifaceted role as a think tank in the hydrogen energy field based on data derived from the pilot operation of a hydrogen fuel cell power plant, while also actively participating in the establishment of a cooperative association between industry, academia, and research, thereby emerging as a representative "hydrogen-centered university" in Korea.
