Dr. Seo Jeong-sang, the founder of Woosuk University was born on May 10, 1928, in Iman-ri, Iseo-myeon, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, as the second son among five sons and seven daughters.
He entered elementary school in 1935 and graduated from the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University in 1949,
experiencing school life during the suffering of the nation around the end of Japanese colonial rule and the liberation period.
During this time, like many Korean rural students who emerged from the hardships of the late Japanese colonial period, Dr. Seo's family was not particularly well-off, so he inevitably faced many difficulties until he completed his schooling. He often mentioned that his secret to health was due to having to run a long way to catch the bus while attending Jeonju High School. Born as the son of a poor rural scholar, his desire for education burned brightly, but his economic conditions could not satisfy that desire, and it was precisely this point that became the impetus for his commitment to educational endeavors.
From his school days, he dreamed of scholarship and educational projects for poor students overcoming adversity, realizing that the nation's long-term plan lies in education. Immediately after graduating from university, he began his teaching career and spent his life in education at institutions such as Jeonju High School, Jeonbuk National University, Sookmyung Women's University, and Wonkwang University. On the other hand, to establish an economic foundation for educational endeavors, he founded Samhwa Pharmaceutical Company during his time at Jeonbuk National University and began his scholarship program, which had been his dream since his school days, providing scholarships to over 100 students.
However, it can be seen that his decisive commitment to educational endeavors stemmed from the inspiration he received from the saying of patriot An Jung-geun, "A million pieces of gold are not worth one educated child," and from the educational philosophy of Teacher Kim Seong-soo of Incheon. In particular, as he himself expressed, "I wanted to become a small Incheon," he emulated the achievements of Teacher Incheon, such as the establishment of Korea University, which was a fruit of his educational endeavors, and in a broader sense, the founding of media outlets like the Dong-A Ilbo, which is one of the social education projects. The establishment of Woosuk Academy and the acquisition and management of Jeonbuk Ilbo are indicative of this commitment. The following quote well illustrates his determination.
‘For a long time, I have had a sincere ideal that has been a guiding principle in my life and that I wanted to achieve. It is about how all of us who have lived through a history of suffering can become more dignified, self-aware, creative, and honest in our efforts. Therefore, I decided to dedicate myself to nurturing future generations and started educational endeavors under difficult conditions. Along with this, I aspired to establish a diligent and creative life and to spread it to build a solid national foundation and regional strength. The fact that I boldly decided to engage in journalism and manage a newspaper was also because I wanted to realize this ideal. In this sense, I have admired the great achievements of Teacher Kim Seong-soo, a great star from this region, and I believe that honoring Teacher Kim's achievements is the highest point of my life, and I have thought that achieving even one percent of Teacher Kim's will would be my ultimate goal.’

Meanwhile, the fact that he replicated 500 copies of the calligraphy "A million pieces of gold are not worth one educated child," which is said to have been written by patriot An Jung-geun in Yeosu prison, and distributed them to educational institutions in Jeollabuk-do shows how deeply he was moved by An's strong educational philosophy. The following is the founding philosophy of our university, established in line with his educational ideals after he founded the university.
「The shortcut to embodying the spirit of Hongik Ingan, which is the founding ideology of our country, is to realize that it lies solely in nurturing future generations, cultivating talented individuals who are capable, trustworthy, and able to provide assistance, and thereby building a welfare society internally and contributing to the co-prosperity of humanity externally. This is the founding spirit of our university.」
